Why Winter In Michigan is the Perfect Time to Declutter

Ask the Experts | Janelle Azar

As the temperatures stay cold and the days stay short, it’s easy to feel a bit “stir crazy” within our own four walls. When it’s sub-zero outside, we naturally retreat indoors—but if your home is filled with piles of “stuff,” that retreat can quickly become a source of stress.

Research consistently shows that physical clutter is directly correlated to increased cortisol (stress) levels. In these dark, gloomy months, “lightening the load” of the items you look at every day can instantly lift your mood and provide a much-needed sense of control. Why wait for a beautiful, sunny spring day to be stuck inside decluttering? Now is the perfect time to tackle your home so you can be free to enjoy the outdoors later.

To get started without feeling overwhelmed, try three of my favorite strategies:

  • Be Realistic and Start Small: Pick one specific spot—whether it’s a single junk drawer or a small closet. Remember, clutter didn’t accumulate overnight, so don’t expect to undo years of collecting in thirty minutes. Setting achievable goals prevents burnout.
  • The “Categories First” Method: Before you throw anything away, pull everything out of the space and sort items into categories. It is much easier to decide to let go of a spatula when you realize you actually own six of them. Seeing the “total volume” of a category is a powerful reality check.
  • Audit for Your Current Life: Ask yourself: Does this item fit my life today, or am I holding onto a “fantasy self” (like hobby gear for a project I haven’t touched in years)? If it’s broken, needs repair, or hasn’t been used in 12 months, it’s time to let it go.

By clearing your physical space, you’re clearing your mental space, too. Take advantage of the cold Michigan winter to create a home that feels like a breath of fresh air.
